01. What an NFC card actually holds
NFC, for Near Field Communication, allows data exchange over a very short distance. In a business card, the chip most often holds an NDEF message containing an HTTPS address. It does not necessarily store your photo, your number and all your links. Those stay on the online profile the address points to.
The chip is passive: it has neither battery nor internet connection. The phone creates an electromagnetic field that powers it during the read. The range is deliberately short, usually a few centimetres. You therefore need to bring the right part of the phone close, rather than sweeping the card quickly past the whole device.
02. The steps of a tap, from card to profile
When the phone detects the tag, it reads the stored address and shows a notification. The visitor taps it to open the profile in their browser. They keep control of the action: bringing the card near does not silently add a contact and gives no access to the phone’s contents.
Once the profile is open, what happens depends on what the owner published. It may be calling, sending an email, viewing a portfolio, opening a social profile or downloading a vCard. A vCard prepares the details for the address book, but the visitor still has to confirm saving them, depending on their phone.

03. iPhone and Android compatibility
Recent iPhones read NFC tags without any app, screen on and unlocked. Most modern Android phones do the same, provided NFC is enabled in the settings.
Older or entry-level models may lack the chip. That is precisely why a QR code should accompany the card: it costs nothing and covers every case where the tap does not happen.
04. NFC or QR code: two ways into the same profile
The two are not rivals. NFC is faster in a face-to-face meeting; the QR code works at a distance, in a photo, on a screen or a poster, and on any phone with a camera.
Since both point at the same address, the profile is updated once and both routes follow. Choosing between them is choosing a situation, not a technology.
05. Why the details stay editable
The chip holds an address, not your details. Changing a phone number or a job title therefore means editing the online profile — the printed card carries on working unchanged.
That is what separates an NFC card from a printed one: the object stops being what carries the information and becomes what points to it.
06. Security and privacy: what to check
A passive tag cannot install anything, run anything, or read the phone. What it can do is hand over an address — so the question is what that address serves.
Check three things before handing out a card: that the address is HTTPS, that the profile only publishes what you meant to publish, and that you can revoke or repoint the card if it is lost.

07. A checklist before handing over your card
Five checks, done once, that avoid the awkward moment of a card that opens nothing or the wrong thing.
- Test the tap on an iPhone and on an Android.
- Check the QR code with a camera, in poor light.
- Open the profile on a small screen and read it through.
- Download the vCard and check what lands in the address book.
- Confirm that no detail you did not intend to publish is visible.
